Enrollment Management Council

December 18, 2014

Present: Shahida Dar, Jen DeWeerth, Matthew Fikes, Dan Ianno, Heather Kesterson, Bill McDonald, Jake Mihevc
Excused: Rich Haubert, Lew Kahler, Tia Lock
Summary Points on International Recruitment Work Group Charter
  • The council reviewed a draft charter for an International Recruitment Work Group. Suggestions were made to refine the purpose statement and to reorder and refine the “Does” tasks.
  • Even though international students is a wide open recruitment field, the work group can add value by analyzing cost/benefit to various approaches/countries/streams and grounding recommendations in those.
  • There were questions about whether there might be the need for additional work group charters as key enrollment priorities are identified. Would this be once a year or an “as it arises” basis? EMC would need to think through those on a case by case, willing to either create or not create such work groups based on data and priorities and opportunities identified.
Summary Points on Survey Results
  • Items that stood out were focusing on dual credit, career and transfer programs, diversity so that one program or program area is not the single enrollment “answer.”
  • There were questions about critiques that came through in the comments, for example, about Geospatial which attracted a lot of marketing dollars but yields very small enrollments.
  • There were questions about the size of some programs such as general studies, and what those programs accomplish for the students in them. People felt that if there are not many jobs available for a career program, and not a clear transfer pathway, we should not have those programs.
  • There was additional discussion about the importance of faculty in recruiting (high school visits, hosting HS students). This is successful when done and could be done even more.
Next Steps:
  • Jen and Dan will finalize the draft International Recruitment Work group charter and forward to Stephanie Reynolds.
  • Jen will forward electronic versions of the strategic planning data from the Paige group and Zogby, as prepared for the vision council in December (there are several summary documents).
  • Matt Fikes will close the survey page, compile and organize the responses, and forward electronically to give the members a few weeks in January to read and review before the Jan. 30th meeting.
